|  | The research award competition is the backbone of the program which informs MERC’s research agenda. The research proposals received throughout the year ensures that MERC secretariat is kept abreast of what local researchers identify as priority research themes in their local contexts. The very large number of research proposals sent to MERC is a testimony to the need for research funds that are not attached to pre-set agendas and donor priorities.
