The Foundation Mattei Dogan Prize in Sociology PDF Print E-mail

Call for nominations: October 15, 2008

The establishment of the Foundation Mattei Dogan Prize in Sociology, to be awarded every four years by the International Sociological Association was announced by Mattei Dogan at the mid-term meeting of the ISA Research Council in July 2000. The prize was awarded for the first time at the XV ISA World Congress in Brisbane, Australia, to Neil Smelser. The second laureate was Alain Touraine (2006).

The prize is to be awarded to a sociologist in recognition of his or her lifetime accomplishments, a scholar of very high standing in the profession and of outstanding international reputation. The Prize is awarded every four years at the ISA World Congress, when the Laureate will deliver the Dogan Prize Lecture. The value of the prize is US$ 5000.

Nominations are invited for the 2008 Prize, which will be awarded at the upcoming XVII ISA World Congress of Sociology scheduled for Gothenburg, Sweden, July 2010.
The documents required for a nominee’s dossier are:

  • (a) letters of nomination signed by the officers of at least two ISA Research Committees, Working or Thematic Groups, or by several ISA members in good standing, or by an academic institution (a research institute, a sociology department), or by the officers of at least two national associations of sociology
  • (b) letters of recommendation signed by eminent scholars who do not need to be ISA members
  • (c) biography and bibliography of the nominee
  • (d) evidence of the visibility of the nominee in the sociological literature
  • (e) any document that would enhance the merit of the nominee.

In exceptional cases, the prize may be offered to a coherent team of several researchers enjoying a high reputation in the international community of sociologists. The team’s dossier should be evaluated by the Search Committee along with the dossiers of individual candidates. (Examples of what is meant by a team are, for the previous generation: Campbell, Converse, Miller and Stokes, who worked together for many years, or the SSRC Committee on Comparative Politics 1959-1971.)

Nominations should be received by October 15, 2008.
They should be sent by email to the ISA Secretariat ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ), with copies to the ISA President, Michel Wieviorka ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and to the chair of the Research Council, Arturo Rodriguez Morato ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

Current officers of the ISA Executive Committee, of the Research Council, and of the Council of National Associations are not eligible for this award. Former ISA officers become eligible five years after the end of their last ISA mandate.
